Benjamin M. Petty, MD, is a board-certified family medicine and primary care sports medicine physician and the founder of Samaritan Sports Medicine in Raleigh, North Carolina. He specializes in the non-surgical diagnosis and treatment of sports injuries, arthritis, and chronic musculoskeletal conditions, helping patients of all ages return to the activities they love with less pain and better function.
Dr. Petty combines advanced medical training with cutting-edge technology to deliver highly personalized care. He utilizes high-resolution diagnostic ultrasound to precisely evaluate joints, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and muscles, allowing for accurate diagnoses and targeted, ultrasound-guided treatments. His clinical expertise includes regenerative and interventional therapies such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP), bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), viscosupplementation, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, percutaneous tenotomy procedures, and ultrasound-guided nerve and joint injections.
Before founding Samaritan Sports Medicine, Dr. Petty served as a Sports Medicine and Regenerative Medicine specialist at leading orthopedic organizations, including Cape Fear Valley Orthopedics and Sports Medicine and EmergeOrtho, where he directed the Orthobiologics Program. In these roles, he cared for athletes and active individuals at all levels, managing both acute injuries and complex chronic conditions.
Dr. Petty is also deeply committed to education, research, and whole-person care. He serves as adjunct faculty with the Campbell University Sports Medicine Fellowship and School of Medicine, mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows. He has participated in multiple clinical research studies, published in peer-reviewed journals, and regularly lectures on regenerative medicine, arthritis prevention, injury recovery, and safe, performance-based exercise. He also completed a graduate program at Duke Divinity School in Theology, Healthcare, and Culture, reflecting his commitment to compassionate, ethically grounded, and whole-person medicine.
A former Division I basketball player at North Carolina State University, Dr. Petty brings a unique perspective to sports medicine, understanding firsthand the physical demands, mental challenges, and competitive mindset of athletes. This personal experience allows him to connect deeply with athletes and active individuals while designing treatment and recovery plans focused on safe return to sport, performance, and longevity.
